What happens when you go green?

McKinsey predicted a couple of years ago that by 2020 IT would be the largest polluter of the earth and would produce carbon dioxide more than even the aviation industry. This report turned out to be the eye opener for CIO's and going green and recycling was at the top in their list of priorities.

This alarm though faded in light of the economic fallout which started in the end of 2008. Now with the Copenhagen summit a passe and its failure to produce any substantial results, people must themselves weigh the benefits of going green; specially CIO's.In light of this crisis here is a report on the benefits of going green.

Security Control Attestation for cloud Computing Providers

To understand how certifications can help the Cloud service providers, we can look at the strategies various IT sourcing providers with global delivery models adopted when it came to providing assurance to their customers on Information Security & regulatory compliance.

In the early years of outsourcing, there were lot of apprehensions expressed by potential customers around the state of Information Security, Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance when outsourcing to IT service providers. The IT service providers knew that to get customers business, they need to provide a reasonable assurance on the state of Information Security to their customers.  In any outsourcing discussion that took place around that time, there used to be a huge focus on such topics.

Clouds and Infrastructure Management

Typically infrastructure management involves design & planning of infrastructure components, procurement, deployment, operations and disposal. However, cloud computing introduces a different aspect – cloud management activities.

Cloud computing has various flavours like SaaS, PaaS, IaaS from services point of view. Also from ownership model, there are public clouds which are owned by service providers and then there are private clouds which offer cloud computing services but are owned by the customer themselves and reside in their data centers.

Corporate Ethics Isn't About Rules; It's About Honesty

Somewhere along the way, as we chase our goals, deadlines, targets or simply our daily to-do lists, we tend to forget the real issues in the world outside our windows. This post may seem a tad more emotional than my previous ones. I am emotional. Recent developments impel me to cut across all boundaries and appeal to leadership to shake off the 'bigger-larger-higher' stupor that has consumed business.

The very least we can do is to be honest about what we do each day. There is so much poverty, so much hunger across the world. Greed for revenue and profits can only transform our world into an animal kingdom.

A Time for Flexible, Positive Leaders

As the world looks back to look ahead, nothing could ring more true today than Alvin Toffler's prophesy: "The illiterate of the twenty-first century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."

As leaders in times such as these, we too have to "learn, unlearn and relearn" the principles of leadership and growth. To learn what went wrong, to unlearn the flawed policies of the past, and relearn the right way forward until we bring stability back to our businesses and to our economy.

What are the key Infra decisions?

It is getting increasingly difficult for enterprise CIOs to determine the IT infrastructure outsourcing and multisourcing decisions. Whom and Why it should be outsourced coupled with the sledgehammer task of finding out the right vendor for the job, has stolen the wink out of them. Read the report of a well known US based multinational; how it managed to take the decision and what were the factors they considered before doing so.

The Energy Conference

Stabilizing carbon dioxide levels at 450 parts per million in the atmosphere--a level that is projected to result in an average global temperature rise of about two degrees Celsius, would require an "energy and environment revolution" with investment in the trillions of dollars. This is what Nobuo Tanaka had to say at the recently held MIT Energy Conference at Boston. To read more about the happenings click here.

Who Is the Leader of the Future

Who is the future leader? One who asks the right questions or one who provides the right answers? A shepherd or a catalyst? The one in the driver's seat or the navigator who sets the direction? Would a future leader be a financial architect, a social architect, or the green architect?

The dark clouds gathering around business were overlooked for a couple of days in Florida last week as 600 business leaders searched for the rainbow beyond the storm at Unstructure, the HCL Global meet. Powerful questions, debates and thought provoking ideas stamped the proceedings. I cannot help but come away feeling positive, recharged and optimistic that the world of business is in safe hands.
